One Airport, Many Travelers: Tips For Every Journey

No two travelers are exactly alike. Some passengers are heading off on their honeymoon, and some are navigating the airport solo. Each situation brings its own challenges and considerations. The good news? A little preparation can make the journey much smoother.

Over the past couple of years, we have done posts on DTW travel tips for every kind of traveler, from couples to solo flyers to seniors. Today we’re putting many of them into one guide so you can easily reference it later. Start your trip feeling relaxed and ready for takeoff with these helpful tips for several types of travelers, from honeymooners to seniors to solo adventurers.

1.    Solo Adventurers

Traveling alone can be exciting and freeing. After all, you’re on your own and have no one to answer for but yourself. You can choose where and when you go on vacation, what and where you will eat, and what excursions you will partake in. At the same time, it can be isolating and overwhelming because you have to handle every aspect of your journey on your own, from shuttle queues to carrying your luggage.

Whether you’re flying for business or pleasure, the DTW airport parking you choose can make a world of difference.

Rideshares + Parking

If parking your own car doesn’t make sense (say, you’ll be out of town for days or weeks). In that case, rideshares can pose a flexible alternative. Why?

  • No need to juggle parking logistics—just book your ride and go.
  • You don’t have to search for your car or wait for shuttles upon your return.
  • Rideshares can avoid parking fees entirely, making this a cost-effective choice when the budget is tight.

That being said, it can be very convenient to have your own car at the airport, and that’s why valet parking offers both flexibility and convenience so you can leave on your schedule without depending on friends or rideshare availability.

Smarter Combined Strategies

It’s important to stay flexible when traveling solo. Combining a valet and rideshare strategy can work to your advantage.

  • If you fly often or keep your car at your travel destination, valet service offers maximum convenience.
  • If you’re heading out on a long-term trip, it may make more sense to userideshare or prearranged drop-off to avoid parking fees and maintenance while away.
  • If you plan to return from your trip at an odd hour, valet services ensure your car is waiting when you land.

Safety First

Solo travelers need to be mindful of safety, as they are more vulnerable to risks than large groups. Valet parking reduces exposure to deserted lots, often combined with 24/7 security and well-lit check-in and check-out areas. But even if you decide to park on your own:

  • Choose active, well-lit areas
  • Hide valuables from sight
  • Snap a picture of your parking spot or nearby signage

2.    Seniors

Travel is a challenge at any age, but for seniors, it’s especially so. This age group often suffers from health conditions and decreased mobility that can hamper the journey from the start. That’s why it’s so important to start the trip off right – and that’s in the parking lot. From long walks and heavy luggage to confusing airport environments and the need for mobility aids, a simple trip from the parking lot to the terminal can morph into a tiring ordeal for seniors.

Limit Walking Distance

With valet service, senior travelers can be driven right to the front door, not only saving energy and time, but reducing the risk of a fall or injury as well.

Valet attendants can pick up the slack and carry seniors’ luggage so they don’t have to navigate stairs, shuttles, or uneven sidewalks with bags slung over their shoulders. And when inclement weather strikes, this convenience is even more important.

Reduce Fatigue

The plane ride itself can be physically exhausting, which is why it’s important for seniors to be as well rested as possible before they board the flight. Valet parking connections can minimize their exertion so they can breeze through the terminal with energy to spare.

Safety and Accessibility

Safety is a main concern for any senior traveler. Any missteps can carry risk, which is why many seniors prefer valets to escort their cars, while providing lighting and surveillance not found in standard lots.

Time Efficiency and Stress Relief

Airport parking can certainly be time-consuming. Seniors can easily get stressed out searching for an open spot and navigating traffic before they even get to the long security lines. With valet parking, all senior travelers have to do is drive up, hand over the keys, and head inside for a calmer arrival or departure.

Health and Comfort

Seniors who face long walks, sometimes over uneven terrain or sidewalks, can risk a fall, strain, or minor injury. Valet parking removes these risks and helps seniors prevent pain and stress. Emotional and physical health when traveling is of the utmost importance for older adults.

Helpful Extras

Companies like Valet Connections often offer optional extras designed to enhance the experience for seniors, such as:

  • Covered drop-off areas to avoid exposure to wind, rain, or snow.
  • Assistance with mobility aids, such as walkers or wheelchairs.
  • Real-time tracking of vehicle location or return time.
  • Vehicle warming or cooling on return for temperature comfort.
  • Optional services such as oil changes and car details while away.

For many seniors, these perks give them an added sense of security and reassurance that takes the guesswork out of the trip and allows them to focus on having fun. Worrying about logistics saps the enjoyment out of any trip, and this is especially so for older adults.

3.    Honeymooners

Getting married is an exciting time, and so is planning your honeymoon! But it can be stressful to organize, pack, book travel, reserve parking, and so much more when all you want to do is just enjoy yourselves. But plan you must. From booking airline tickets and reserving your valet parking to organizing travel documents and creating a travel itinerary, we have compiled these helpful tips to follow when planning your honeymoon.

Create a Travel Itinerary

Now it’s time to come up with a travel itinerary to guide you through your trip — very useful especially if you will be hitting several countries or islands on your honeymoon.

Keep the itinerary in your purse or backpack so you always have access to it. You will want to include:

  • All travel information including flight, car, train, parking, and hotel reservations with check-in information, times, reservation numbers, and locations.
  • Tour confirmations or activity reservations, printed out and ready to go. This will prevent the need to scroll through emails trying to find your reservation details especially if you’ll be in areas with spotty wi-fi reception.
  • Passports and all travel documents, as well as small bills for tipping.

Create a Budget

Coming up with a spending limit you’re both comfortable with is essential, and it’s best to do this before you get too far into the planning. Make sure you’re both on the same page in terms of how much will be spent on food, drink, lodging, excursions, and souvenirs.

Decide on preferred methods of payment while you’re on vacation, such as credit or debit cards. Contact your credit card companies to notify them you’ll be on vacation and where so they don’t flag suspicious activity. Find out what the ATM and exchange fees are, as well as where the nearest ATM is to your hotel.

Keep Your Valuables Close

Don’t pack valuables in your checked luggage, such as jewelry, passports, essential documents (reservations, tickets, and license), credit cards, electronics, and medications. Put those valuables in the hotel safe. Keep extra credit cards and cash hidden in the safe in case your wallet is stolen or lost.

Gather the Proper Forms of ID

A marriage certificate is not a valid form of identification. If you’re a woman who took her husband’s last name, you will need to bring your birth certificate and license as well as your marriage certificate, as it’s unlikely that you will be able to get a new license reflecting your new name in time for the honeymoon.

Likewise, your plane tickets and name booked at the resort should be the same as on your driver’s license and passport. You may want to book your airline and reservations under your maiden name so no issues arise.

Shout it From the Rooftops

Telling people you’re on your honeymoon can get you some pretty cool perks and upgrades. Notify both your airline and your hotel that you are traveling for your honeymoon. They may have some surprises in store for newlyweds, such as room and seat upgrades, champagne toasts or in-flight announcements. Tell your servers at restaurants too for free desserts or other perks. Who doesn’t love to celebrate a happy couple?
